AFAM Undergraduate Spotlight: Diego Palko reflects on his Spring 2024 CURO Presentation

IAAS major, Diego Palko, presented a poster in the 2024 Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) Symposium, which highlights the work of UGA students and presents an opportunity for them to communicate their research to a broader community. Mr. Palko’s poster, “The Evolution of R&B and Themes Presented in the Genre: A Literary and Sonic Analysis,” presented information on the roots of R&B and on its evolution as a sonic and literary genre, engaging themes of Blackness, sexuality and love, and Black womanhood.

In a groundbreaking tribute to Athens history, the captivating local production Linnentown - The Musical is set to take center stage in April 2024. Written by Hattie Thomas Whitehead, author of "Giving Voice to Linnentown," the musical depicts a historically significant African American community in Athens, Georgia, in the 1960s that was erased due to urban renewal.

Last year marked the 40th anniversary of the publication of All the Women Are White, All the Blacks Are Men, But Some of Us Are Brave, an anthology that solidified Black Women's Studies as a field of inquiry centering the voices, experiences, and intellectual contributions of Black women. The book was co-edited by UGA emeritus professor, Dr. Patricia Bell-Scott.
