The Institute for African American Studies is proud to announce the winners of the Lee Roy B. Giles Encouragement Award, established in 2010 by his wife, Dr. Freda Scott Giles, Professor Emeritus in the Institute. The Award honors the legacy of Mr. Giles with a cash award given to a student who has exhibited excellence in the area of African American Studies, whether in research, practical application, or academic experience. The application committee chooses one graduate student and one undergraduate student to receive the award each spring. This year’s award winners are Aaliyah Khaiphanliane, an undergraduate major in African American Studies and Sociology, with minors in Political Science and Women Studies, and Carlyncia McDowell, a doctoral student in Philosophy in Educational and Administration Policy who has also completed a certificate in Educational Law and Policy. The Institute also acknowledges Abigail Popwell (Doctor of Philosophy: Musicology/Ethnomusicology), Sophia Flemming (Doctorate of Communication Studies), Tamika Money (Doctorate of Business Administration, Management-Strategy and Entrepreneurship) for their exceptional graduate work. Mathew Turnipseed (Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Physiology, minor in Exercise and Sports Science, Public Health), and Shana Jackson (Bachelors of Fine Arts, Fabric Design, minor in African American Studies) outstanding undergraduates.
