NEW course: Philosophy and Race (Spring 2021)

NEW course: Philosophy and Race (Spring 2021)

Dr. Aaron Meskin (Professor and Head of Philosophy Department) reached out to us in the Institute for African American Studies regarding promoting a course this coming Spring 2021. Direct any questions to Dr. Meskin (aaron.meskin@uga.edu).

This class will focus on some important issues in the philosophy of race. We will explore metaphysical, epistemological, political, ethical and aesthetic questions about race and race thinking. We’ll pay particular attention to cutting-edge cultural issues such as the treatment of monuments, the renaming of buildings, and cultural appropriation. Paul Taylor’s Race: A Philosophical Introduction will be a core text. Other readings will be by a range of historical and contemporary authors including Alcoff, Al-Saji, Appiah, Dotson, Du Bois, and Haslanger.

AFAM majors, minors, and graduate certificate students who elect to complete PHIL 4700/6700 during Spring 2021 may use this course to fulfill one of their AFAM requirements. Reach out to Dr. Lesley Feracho (lferacho@uga.edu) to schedule your advising appointment to discuss.
