See registration details Wednesday, September 28 2022, 5:30pm The Institute for African American Studies is delighted to co-sponsor another semester long Book Club co-facilitated by Sha'Mira Covington, one of our Graduate Certificate students. Participants in the Book Club will read Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous Landscapes Through Indigenous Science by Jessica Hernandez. Sha'Mira and Kristian will purchase books through grant funding. Scheduled meeting dates: September 28th, 2022, October 12th, 2022, November 2nd, 2022, and November 16th, 2022 at 5:30pm. We are planning on in-person meetings on South Campus. We intend to get to know each other and informally discuss the book’s themes in the first meeting. We plan to read and discuss roughly the first half of the book for the second book club meeting and to read and discuss the second half of the book for the third meeting. The fourth book club meeting, we will debrief, practice some yoga/meditation, and fellowship. We welcome all to participate in this Book Club, while recognizing and understanding that the aim of this group is to create a safe(r) space in the University community to discuss and feel through this content together. Because sustainable education and industry is largely white and we are interested in decolonizing our educational practices, we intend to emphasize Black/Brown/POC/Indigenous ways of knowing.
