Congratulations, 2022 Giles Award Winners!

The Institute for African American Studies is proud to announce the winners of the 2022 Lee Roy B. Giles Encouragement Award, established in 2010 by his wife, Dr. Freda Scott Giles, Professor Emerita in the Institute.  The Award honors the legacy of Mr. Giles with a $500 cash award given to a student who has exhibited excellence in the area of African American Studies, whether in research, practical application, or academic experience.

Virtual Giles Award Celebration

The Institute for African American Studies is excited to honor the 2022 Giles Award recipients through a Virtual Zoom Celebration on Thursday, April 28th from 7-8 PM. AFAM Graduate Certificate Student Spotlight: Sha’Mira Covington!

Sha'Mira Covington

Sha'Mira Covington is a PhD candidate in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Interiors and the Institute for African American Studies, and she graduates in Spring 2023. Her research explores archival sources to illuminate the myriad of ways that Black women have used embodied modes as liberatory praxis. She’s also a yoga teacher, doula, liberationist, and abolitionist.
