African American Studies Major

African American Studies majors must take AFAM 2000 as a part of Area V or Area VI of the
general education curriculum. In addition to AFAM 2000, students seeking a major in African
American Studies must complete 24 credit hours in African American Studies courses for a total
of 27 credit hours. Apply to major in African American Studies.

Students must choose twelve (12) hours from one area of concentration listed below and six (6)
hours from each of the other two areas:

History and Culture
Behavioral and Social Inquiry
Languages, Literatures, and the Arts

African American Studies Minor

Students seeking a minor in African American Studies must complete AFAM 2000 plus 15 credits
in African American Studies Courses for a total of 18 credits. Apply to minor in African American Studies.

Certificate Program in African American Studies

Students seeking a certificate in African American Studies must complete AFAM 2000, plus 12
credits in African American Studies courses for a total of 15 credits. Apply for a certificate in African American Studies.
