AFAM minor student spotlight: Aslean Janelle Florence recently accepted to Harvard DivEx program!

Aslean Florence AFAM undergrad minor

The Institute for African American Studies proudly celebrates Aslean Janelle Florence, a fourth year majoring in Sociology with a minor in African American Studies, on her recent acceptance to the Harvard University DivEx program.

On her acceptance to the program and advice for other students, Aslean said, “Harvard DivEx is a program designed to engage with students from underrepresented backgrounds that have a passion for social change and are considering a future that includes helping with social justice and diversity. Each year they invite a few students from across the country to visit Harvard and learn about its Divinity School. My main suggestion for students that want to apply next year is to start the application early as possible and prioritize finding out who they truly are. My personal letter was what I was most proud of because of how personal I was able to get. Therefore, I heavily advise anyone thinking of applying to dig deep and share their story. I am so excited for this endeavor and cannot wait to proudly represent UGA.” We are so proud of you, Aslean!

Students interested in the major, minor, courses, or graduate certificate in African American studies are encouraged to connect with our office.
