AFAM Minor, Niyah Brown, launches #NaturalNovember campaign

Natural November Logo

Back in October, second-year student and UGA Housing Resident Assistant, Niyah Brown, hosted an interactive and informative program in Creswell Hall promoting her new #NaturalNovember campaign. Niyah is currently majoring in pharmaceutical studies with a minor in African American Studies, so we reached out for an exclusive interview about #NaturalNovember. Read more below!

  • Could you give a brief background regarding your #NaturalNovember campaign?

Natural November is a social media campaign I established. The purpose of this campaign is to encourage self-appreciation, self-empowerment, and inspire unity among African American women through the power of the natural hair

  • How can folks learn more about #NaturalNovember? Can they participate in any events or social media campaigns?

You can learn more about my campaign by going on UGA Housing’s official Instagram page and their story, as new posts will be made every Sunday in the month of November! You can also come up to me when seeing me around campus or message me on my Instagram, godgirl_160, with any questions you may have! #NaturalNovember is a campaign targeted to women of color and the African American Community. That being said, anyone can empower and support this campaign!

  • Finally, why should students consider a major, minor, or taking courses within African American Studies?

You should try to leave UGA with the most diverse and unique education experience you can have! With taking AFAM courses, minors, or majors, you get unique perspectives of the world we live in. You will be exposed to lifechanging information from our history, and not just told in one perspective, but through other’s eyes and how they perceive the world. You will be surprised how much you can learn in one African American Studies class!

  • Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I encourage everyone on campus to not be afraid to dive into information and history other than your own! Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, because when you do, great knowledge is obtained!

Thank you for your work, Niyah!
