ASLAH Athens Branch: Black History Month Dinner & Student Essay Awards The UGA History Department, the Institute for African American Studies, and the ASALH Athens Branch are co-sponsoring an awards dinner for the winners of a Black History Month student essay contest. In recognition of the current election year and the women's suffrage centennial, Athens-area high school students have written essays on the theme “African Americans and the Vote.” Judges include UGA grad students from select departments. DJ Summit in the Global South Composer, percussionist, and DJ Val Jeanty will share the stage at Ciné with Ashon Crawley, associate professor of religious studies and African American and African studies at the University of Virginia, on Thursday, Feb. 13. Associate Director, Dr. Lesley Feracho, named 2019-2020 Willson Fellow Associate Director of IAAS, Dr. Lesley Feracho, recently returned from a 20-day trip to three cities in Brazil during which she engaged with the local, thriving black Brazilian feminist community through research, cultural events, meetings with activists, and dialogue with members of these communities. Aralee Strange Lecture: Jamila Lyiscott: “Black Appetite. White Food.” Dr. Jamila Lyiscott is a social justice education scholar, spoken word artist and educational consultant. She was recently appointed assistant professor of social justice education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is a senior research fellow of Teachers College, Columbia University’s Institute for Urban and Minority Education. Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics, and Guilt in America Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics and Guilt in America The School of Law will host a discussion of the recently published book Rap on Trial: Race, Lyrics and Guilt in America, which was co-authored by Andrea L. Dennis, the holder of the law school’s John Byrd Martin Chair of Law. The discussion will be held Jan. 30 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Larry Walker Room of Dean Rusk Hall.
