Being and Blackness in Spain: Exploring Contemporary Afro-Spanish Identity

Sponsored by the Willson Center for Humanities & Arts, Department of Romance Languages, and the Institute for African American Studies, we welcome Dr. Chantell Smith Limerick of Centre College on November 8, 2023, at 5 PM in 118 Gilbert Hall.*

This talk examines the works of contemporary Afro-Spanish authors and artists to comment on the identity formation of Afro-descendants born and raised in Spain. It will focus on how references to diasporic Black figures as well as to Latin American and US Afrodescendant pop culture in these works contribute to the development of a Black subjectivity and evoke a transnational sense of Black identity and resistance.
