Undergraduate

The Institute for African American Studies offers undergraduates the option to major, minor, or obtain a certificate in African American Studies.

 

African American Studies Major

African American Studies majors must take AFAM 2000 as a part of Area V or Area VI of the general education curriculum. In addition to AFAM 2000, students seeking a major in African American Studies must complete 24 credit hours in African American Studies courses for a total of 27 credit hours.

Students must choose twelve (12) hours from one area of concentration listed below and six (6) hours from each of the other two areas. The three areas of concentration are History and Culture, Behavioral and Social Inquiry, and Languages, Literatures, and the Arts.

African American Studies Minor

Students seeking a minor in African American Studies must complete AFAM 2000 plus 15 credits in African American Studies Courses for a total of 18 credits.

Students seeking a certificate in African American Studies must complete AFAM 2000, plus 12 credits in African American Studies courses for a total of 15 credits.

Graduate

The Institute for African American Studies offers graduate students a graduate certificate in African American Studies

Graduate Certificate in African American Studies

Students seeking the graduate certificate in African American Studies must take the following courses:

  • AFAM 7500 (Graduate Introduction to African American Studies)
  • AFAM 7770 (Teaching Practicum in African American Studies)
  • nine credit hours of graduate level AFAM, AFAM cross-listed, or pre-approved courses complementary to the student’s major field program of study. 

Students must undergo advisement concerning the certificate at the Institute for African American Studies prior to completion of the certificate program.
